Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has highlighted the need for an affordable and reliable transport system for ordinary people in the country, as well as the development of digital communications, in comments at the inauguration of the new deputy minister of transport and communications, Amilton Alissone.<\/p>\n

Addressing the new deputy minister and the minister, Mateus Magala, who was also sworn in recently, the head of state said that ministry officials should find ways to ensure a transport system that is \u201cavailable, accessible, of quality and at acceptable cost.<\/p>\n

The difficulties that the area is experiencing, he said, could be removed with a culture of dialogue with all actors operating in the transport system.<\/p>\n

The president also called for the development of the digital communication infrastructure in the country, stressing that the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated its vital importance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important to massify digital communication, making it accessible to all citizens wherever they are, regardless of their financial capabilities,\u201d Nyusi stressed, adding that digital technology brings people closer together, reduces costs and makes information available in a timely fashion.<\/p>\n

Noting that there are three years left before the end of his own term, Nyusi used a footballing analogy, pointing out that \u201csometimes, goals are scored in the last minutes.<\/p>\n

Nyusi\u2019s reference to the need for affordable transport comes at a time when Mozambique\u2019s municipalities are raising the prices charged for public transport by road, as fuel costs rise as a result of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and its consequences.<\/p>\n

The hike in the prices of transport and basic necessities in the country has raised the spectre of social tensions and demonstrations in cities, with a number of anonymous calls on social media of late for protests against the authorities.<\/p>\n
