Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) felt obliged, over the past week, to reintroduce military escorts on the road connecting the town of Awasse in Moc\u00edmboa da Praia district to the headquarters of Macomia district in Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken after a caravan of vehicles that had left the Mueda headquarters was, on Sunday of last week, attacked by terrorists between Nova Zamb\u00e9zia and Nova Vida villages in Macomia district, just after passing Awasse.<\/p>\n

Two people lost their lives in the attack and three suffered serious and minor injuries, in addition to material damage to the vehicles.<\/p>\n

The attack also raised several questions, given that the section of road between Awasse and the Macomia headquarters is guarded and patrolled by the FDS, alongside SADC forces from South Africa, and Rwanda.<\/p>\n

In addition, sources told mediaFAX that the way in which the FDS are carrying out their mission is not at all satisfactory to users, because passage is made at high speed, which is seen as dangerous, given the risk of accidents.<\/p>\n

Users say that the FDS seem to think that the goods vehicles and others being escorted are in a position to \u201ccompete with brand new Mahindras\u201d.<\/p>\n

They are therefore asking for some moderation in speed in order to be able to keep up rather than risk being left behind and becoming easy prey for the terrorist bands that, it seems, continue to \u201cstroll\u201d through the area.<\/p>\n

When the route was first reopened, after the supposed liberation of regions previously home to terrorist positions, the FDS introduced escorts, but it was, at some point in time, understood that the stretch of the EN380 in question was safe for the free movement of vehicles.<\/p>\n

However, the latest attacks have proved that the area still requires military escort.<\/p>\n
