Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>he Japanese government on Wednesday made available US$3.9 million (3.7 million euros) in food assistance for those displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The amount, made available through the World Food Programme (WFP), should also be used to respond to food insecurity caused by drought in southern Mozambique, said Kimura Hajime, Japan\u2019s ambassador to Mozambique, during the ceremony to exchange notes with WFP in Maputo.<\/p>\n

According to the official, of the total, US$2.4 million (2.3 million euros) will go towards food and humanitarian assistance for over 36,000 people displaced due to armed violence in Cabo Delgado and the remaining US$1.5 million (1.4 million euros) will support some 17,800 vulnerable people in Gaza and Inhambane provinces in southern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cJapan\u2019s ongoing contributions are saving lives, improving food security for the most vulnerable families and helping to build communities\u2019 resilience to future shocks,\u201d said Pierre Lucas, WFP\u2019s deputy director in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

There are 784,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n

Since July 2021, an offensive by government troops with Rwandan support later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has allowed areas where there was a rebel presence to recover, but their flight has provoked new attacks in other districts used as passage or temporary refuge.<\/p>\n
