Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the third party with a parliamentary seat, accused the government on Tuesday of trying to make the next electoral cycle in Mozambique unviable, criticising the budget deficit announced by the National Elections Commission (CNE).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is not taking this process seriously, it is calling into question a serious organisation and the aims of the Mozambican people,\u201d Ismael Nhacucue, MDM spokesman, said during a press conference in Maputo.<\/p>\n

The issue at stake is a deficit of 2.2 billion meticais (\u20ac34 million) for holding the elections, information recently provided by CNE.<\/p>\n

In the party\u2019s view, Mozambique\u2019s government intends to \u201cmake the process unviable\u201d to \u201cnot allow the opposition to prepare\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMDM is concerned about this issue and we should all be concerned,\u201d stressed the MDM spokesman.<\/p>\n

Mozambique: CNE has acquired 72 more vehicles, to make electoral processes viable \u2013 RM report<\/p>\n

Mozambique begins a new electoral cycle in 2023, with local elections, followed by general elections in 2024 (presidential, legislative, provincial and possibly district elections).<\/p>\n

According to figures from the National Elections Commission released in June this year, Mozambique needed a total of 18.7 billion meticais (\u20ac287 million at current exchange rates) to cover the next electoral cycle.<\/p>\n
