Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Pedro Carvalho has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Absa Bank Mozambique, effective September 1, 2022, the bank announced in a communique on Thursday (19-08). He will replace Rui Barros, who served as CEO since 2014 and successfully led the transition from the former Barclays to what is now Absa Bank Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Absa Bank Mozambique, Lu\u00edsa Diogo, highlighted Carvalho\u2019s experience as Chief Operating Officer and, more recently, Director of Retail and Business Banking, a career which \u201cspeaks for itself\u201d, and demonstrates the reason why he will be the \u201cright person to lead the institution in the next phase of growth, providing natural continuity to the work carried out so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bank explains that, taking into consideration \u201chis extensive experience in the international banking industry, as well as his strong knowledge of the national market\u201d,<\/p>\n

It considered Pedro Carvalho \u201cthe ideal candidate\u201d to replace Rui Barros, who will leave office at the end of August.<\/p>\n

Pedro Carvalho joined Absa in 2014 as Chief Operating Officer. In 2018, he was appointed Director of Retail and Business Banking and, in 2022, Executive Director of the bank. Before joining Absa, Pedro Carvalho was Director of the International Area and Expansion at Atl\u00e2ntico Group (Angola), after serving as General Manager and Director of Special Projects for Atl\u00e2ntico Europa. With a strong background in international banking, he also worked as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at UBS in Portugal, after having developed his career and gained experience at Banco BPI for years.<\/p>\n

The Absa Bank Mozambique Board of Directors also highlights that the appointment of an internal candidate \u201censures continuity and stability, as well as alignment with the recently approved strategic plan\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pedro Carvalho has, since 2014, been part of the management team that operated the turnaround of the Barclays Africa\/Absa in Mozambique operation. As COO, he led the redesign of the entire technological and operational component of the bank, making it a solid base for the accelerated growth that Absa Bank Mozambique has experienced since 2014. On taking over the leadership of the retail and business segment in 2018, Pedro Carvalho focused on the growth of the business and, together with the rest of the management team, implemented the rebranding to Absa, with acknowledged success.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis significant experience and knowledge of the Mozambican market and banking system, acquired over the past eight years, and his skills and experience, are necessary requirements to lead the Bank in this next phase of development,\u201d the statement issued by AbsaBank Mozambique concludes.<\/p>\n
