Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Four police officers are being prosecuted after assaulting a 32-year-old man and a minor for not wearing Covid-19 prevention masks in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, the corporation announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In one case, a policeman accosted a man in his own home after seeing him talking to someone else while out on patrol, with neither of them wearing facemasks.<\/p>\n

The officer entered the house and handcuffed the resident, but the incident turned violent and culminated in the officer shooting the man in the leg. The victim is currently recovering in a health facility.<\/p>\n

In another case, three agents assaulted a 13-year-old girl in Lichinga, the provincial capital, for alleged violation of Covid-19 prevention measures, leaving her immobilised on a public road.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey beat her with clubs and the young woman was immobilised,\u201d Mois\u00e9s Gueve, commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in the province, said in statements broadcast on Tuesday by Televis\u00e3o de Mo\u00e7ambique (TVM).<\/p>\n

The incident, which took place last week, led to complaints on social networks, with the child being rescued by the public and transported to a health unit by other police officers.<\/p>\n

The district commander castigated the agents for their behaviour, saying they \u201cwere never advised to use force\u201d during inspections of compliance with Covid-19 prevention regulations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are being subjected to disciplinary and criminal proceedings,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

These attacks took place days after the death of 34-year-old C\u00e9sar Fumo in Maputo, reportedly shot by agents after breaking the window of a police car during curfew.<\/p>\n

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), a Mozambican non-governmental organisation, on Monday demanded that the agents involved in the case be held accountable.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur police have been very violent, without the slightest respect for the fundamental rights and interests of citizens,\u201d the CDD said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
