Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>TANZANIA and Mozambique are looking for more areas of cooperation that will further add to social and economic gains to the existing bilateral ties. This was revealed on Monday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Amb Joseph Sokoine, when gracing the 15th Permanent Joint Commission (JPC) between Tanzania and Mozambique.<\/p>\n

He said the two countries have plenty of opportunities that will play a big role in further improving the economies for the greater interest of both parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis JPC is part of implementation of agreements of our cooperation for mutual interest. It is held to review progress of the resolutions reached during the last meeting held in 2006,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to him, in the last JPC, the two countries came up with different areas of cooperation that include education, health, water, security, works and transport.<\/p>\n

Some of the areas that will feature in the 15th JPC includes Foreign Affairs, Political, Defence and Security; Works and Transport; Energy and Mining sector; Investment, Industry, Trade and Education.<\/p>\n

After proper identification of the new areas of cooperation, the two governments will prepare contracts that will be signed before official implementation of the additional agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Regarding the transport sector, Amb Sokoine noted the importance by the two countries to come up with a strategy of exploiting the opportunities brought by the Umoja Bridge that links Tanzania and Mozambique for economic gains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bridge was inaugurated in 2010.<\/p>\n

Though, we are yet to fully exploit the benefits of the Unity Bridge and yet, insecurity along the border is another setback to transboundary trade with the potential to affect local livelihoods,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this regard, we have to link the bridge with road infrastructure and work closely to address security challenges to boost movement of goods and people between our countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also called for the efforts by the two countries to use the JPC framework in unbundling obstacles to trade and create an enabling environment in which public and private sector entities can invest in each other\u2019s economy for sustainable development and mutual economic benefit to both sides.<\/p>\n

For his part, the Deputy Director for Africa and Middle East in Mozambique\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Amb Hermenegildo Caetano, said the 15th JPC has a huge role to play in strengthening the diplomatic and economic ties of the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough this meeting, we will be able to identify new potentials that are to be utilized for more economic gains, the government of Mozambique is ready to continue making better use of the available opportunities for win-win arrangements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
