Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, on Monday accused some owners of fuel pumps of financing the terrorist groups that have been attacking parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado province since 2017.<\/p>\n

He was speaking in the central city of Beira during a one day working visit to Sofala province.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a proliferation of fuel pumps in your province\u201d, he told his audience. \u201cI am not prohibiting them, but use legal methods to pay for fuel because. we have information about people who use these pumps as a means to subsidize terrorists\u201d.<\/p>\n

Since October 2017, terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado have caused the death of more than 2,500 people and forced more than 900,000 to leave their home areas to seek refuge in safer places.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is in possession of information proving the existence of fuel pump owners with links to extremist groups operating in the north of the country and who are missing. For this reason, we call for a greater control over the fuel pumps, which are proliferating throughout the province\u201d, Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

During the meeting held with the Sofala Council of State Representation and Provincial Executive, the president also took the opportunity to instruct the Tax Authority (AT) and the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy to exercise greater control over the activities involving the sale of fuel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not opposed to the proliferation of fuel pumps as long as they help catapult the country\u2019s development. Yes, that is what we want, but not if it is for money laundering\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

The president also recommended that the owners of fuel pumps and people who manage large sums of money must use the proper channels for this purpose, namely the banking system.<\/p>\n
