Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, on Friday invited Portuguese companies to invest in the country and explore its resources. The prime minister of Portugal said that Portuguese businesspeople \u201care not just passing through.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi and Ant\u00f3nio Costa participated today in opening the Mozambique- Portugal Business and Investment Forum taking place on the sidelines of the 5th Luso-Mo\u00e7ambican Summit, after having visited three pavilions of FACIM (Maputo International Trade Fair) this morning, including Portuguese exhibitors.<\/p>\n

In his speech, President Nyusi said that the forum aimed to bring together businesspeople from the two countries and facilitate business opportunities, in a \u201ccooperation that is mutually beneficial.<\/p>\n

Nyusi regretted the downward revision of the \u201cgood prospects for a quick and robust economic recovery,\u201d but highlighted the \u201cintroduction of a package of 20 measures to stimulate the economy\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe economies of our countries have a high degree of complementarity,\u201d he noted, pointing out that \u201cPortugal is among the top ten investors in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Considering that \u201cmore can be done,\u201d Nyusi said that Portuguese companies \u201chave shown skills\u201d in sectors such as banking, construction and tourism.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe invite Portugal\u2019s private sector to explore the language that unites us\u201d and explore Mozambique\u2019s potential, such as \u201clocation, favourable weather conditions and the long coastline,\u201d turning \u201cexisting resources into wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pointing out that there are \u201cmutual advantages,\u201d the president urged Mozambican businesspeople to \u201cbuild partnerships with the private sector in Portugal.<\/p>\n

At a press conference after the opening of the forum, Nyusi expressed the country\u2019s intention to be a \u201cfacilitator of the economy.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Portugal\u2019s Prime Minister Ant\u00f3nio Costa pointed out that Portuguese investments are already underway in Mozambique, adding that there are \u201cover 500 companies\u201d in the country and that there are \u201c1,500 Portuguese companies exporting to Mozambique.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPortuguese companies are not just passing through Mozambique, they have been there for a long time and have been at all times, in the difficult times and the promising times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Costa said that \u201cthis is a promising time\u201d for companies to invest in Mozambique, and \u201cunique conditions are created to increase private business activity in Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the press conference, Costa also highlighted the opportunity for Portugal to \u201cimport excellent quality Mozambican products\u201d, which will \u201cbalance the trade balance and help the development\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n

During the Mozambique-Portugal Business and Investment Forum, nine bilateral cooperation agreements were signed, including the Lusophone Compact, which provides Portuguese state guarantees worth \u20ac400 million for investments in Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) and another to review the Portuguese Cooperation Business Fund.<\/p>\n

Another agreement involves GALP, the Cam\u00f5es institute and the Mozambican Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. It aims to set up a reference centre in oil and gas in Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between Mozambique\u2019s Hidroel\u00e9trica de Cahora-Bassa (HCB), Electricidade de Mo\u00e7ambique (EDM), and Portugal\u2019s REN and Visabeira Global to identify \u201ccooperation opportunities in the energy sector\u201d and \u201ccollaboration in the construction, operation, maintenance of distribution networks, electricity transmission networks and energy production through wind farms and photovoltaics.<\/p>\n
