Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s president, Filipe Nyusi, has announced the end of the general obligation to wear masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, with the exception of health units and other particular cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of masks in all covered and closed places is no longer mandatory, however, use in public transport is recommended\u201d, said Nyusi, noting that they will still be required from those who present \u201crespiratory symptoms suggestive of Covid-19\u201d.<\/p>\n

Masks will also continue to be mandatory in health facilities, doctors\u2019 offices, laboratories, pharmacies, elderly care homes and inside commercial aircraft.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi was speaking in an address to the nation to update the Covid-19 prevention measures in force.<\/p>\n

Anyone arriving in the country (except children up to 11 years old) is still required to have a complete vaccination certificate recognised by Mozambique or a negative PCR test.<\/p>\n

The head of state recalled the August figures: Mozambique recorded a total of 498 cases of Covid-19 and five deaths.<\/p>\n

The favourable evolution \u201cis associated with high vaccination coverage\u201d, he pointed out, with more than 14 million people inoculated, corresponding to about 97% of the goal, that is, the population over 18 years of age.<\/p>\n

Nyusi pointed out the need to \u201ccontinue to improve vaccination coverage\u201d, announcing the start of vaccination for younger age groups on September 27 \u2013 from 12 years of age.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Covid-19 pandemic still represents a threat to global health security, so we want to appeal to everyone to take this relaxation of preventive measures responsibly\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

According to the head of state, although the use of a mask is no longer mandatory, \u201cit will continue to be welcome\u201d because it helps \u201cprotect from other diseases\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has this far reported 2,220 deaths from Covid-19, that is, about 1% of the total of 230,076 positive cases registered in the country.<\/p>\n
