Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Maputo Municipal Council (CMCM) intends to conduct a program of requalification of several neighbourhoods to facilitate the provision of public services to citizens, including electricity supply.<\/p>\n

According to the mayor of Maputo, Eneas Comiche, 20 neighbourhoods have already been selected, consisting of precariously built and markedly degraded housing.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Tuesday at the 45th Anniversary Gala of the public-owned electricity company, EDM, Comiche acknowledged the valuable role that this company has been playing in the execution of the \u201cEnergy for All\u201d programme in the Mozambican capital, through the expansion and improvement of the quality of the electricity grid.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are challenging situations related to population growth that lead to the emergence of new settlements in expansion areas where residents require new connections and technical assistance\u201d, said Comiche, adding \u201cthere are also areas of difficult access where generally precarious and disorderly constructions dominate, making access difficult for the installation and maintenance of electricity infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are situations for which the City Council has already begun to act through redevelopment programs in 20 selected neighbourhoods\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

The requalification, according to the mayor, provides the redevelopment of housing, opening of streets, widening and lighting of alleys, and creation of public spaces. \u201cOnce they are lit up, we will have less crime and more spaces for socializing and, above all, healthy spaces\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom this point of view, I believe that we are moving towards facilitating the work of EDM in the neighbourhoods of Maputo and, in partnership, we will contribute to improving the quality of life of the residents\u201d, Comiche added.<\/p>\n

The collaboration between CMCM and EDM in more recent times, he said, is based on the healthy municipal services through the collection of the garbage fee, which is included in the client\u2019s electricity bill.<\/p>\n

Currently, according to Comiche, EDM\u2019s technical teams have been working in collaboration with the structures of the districts and municipal districts, which allows them to respond to emergencies and other needs that arise for EDM customers.<\/p>\n
