Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced on Tuesday the arrest of a 38-year-old man in connection with four kidnappings that took place in Maputo city and province.<\/p>\n

According to the SERNIC spokesperson in Maputo province, Henriques Mendes, the suspect, who has not yet been named, was detained last week on 1 September, in connection with two kidnappings reported in Maputo city and two in the neighbouring city of Matola, in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n

Mendes said the victims of the kidnappers included the businesspeople Shelton Lalgy, Rizwan Adatia and Manis Cantilal.<\/p>\n

The suspect was arrested in Xai-Xai, capital of Gaza province, on the public highway \u201cafter the thorough work that SERNIC was undertaking\u201d, added Mendes.<\/p>\n

The unnamed suspect, who said he was unemployed, denied any involvement in the kidnappings. \u201cI just ask Sernic to do its job and to investigate better. I didn\u2019t take part in any kidnapping\u201d, he told reporters.<\/p>\n

Bur Mendes insisted there is solid evidence against him. \u201cHe should be held responsible for his acts\u201d, he said. \u201cCertainly, he is a member of a gang dedicated to kidnaps, and some of them have been detained\u201d.<\/p>\n

He did not reveal how many more alleged kidnappers are under arrest.<\/p>\n
