Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Members of the Southern African Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference (SACBC) have condoled with the people of God in Mozambique and the Church leadership following the killing of a member of the Comboni Missionary Sisters (CMS).<\/p>\n

Sr. Maria De Coppi was reportedly shot dead by insurgents who attacked the Comboni Mission of Chipene in Mozambique\u2019s Nacala Diocese on the night of Tuesday, September 6.<\/p>\n

In a Wednesday, September 7 statement addressed to \u201cThe President of Mozambique Episcopal Conference of (ECM), Provincial of the Comboni Sisters, brothers and sisters in Christ,\u201d SACBC members express their \u201cdeep sorrow\u201d about the events of the previous night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learnt with deep sorrow about the murder of Sister Maria De Coppi last night in Chipene, Diocese of Nacala, Nampula Province and the destruction of property with which the Comboni Sisters serve the poor of Nampula,\u201d they say in their statement signed by SACBC President, Bishop Sithembele Sipuka.<\/p>\n

The Catholic Bishops of the three-nation Conference say the Italian-born Comboni Sister \u201cjoins many other innocent lives that have been brutally terminated for greed and intolerance of freedom of belief.\u201d<\/p>\n

For them, the 83-year-old member of CMS \u201cdied a martyr\u2019s death because she has not abandoned the poor even in such difficult times.\u201d<\/p>\n

In their collective statement shared with ACI Africa, the Catholic Bishops of Botswana, Eswatini, and South Africa say they remain worried about the Priests and other Nuns who fled the mission after it was attacked \u201cand pray that they are safe where they are\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing one can say at this moment to console you except to assure you that we grieve with you,\u201d SACBC members say, and add, \u201cAt this challenging time, we try to hang on to the words of Jesus, who promises those who mourn while believing in Him that they shall be comforted.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Wednesday, September 7 interview with ACI Africa, the Archbishop of Mozambique\u2019s Nampula Archdiocese said there is \u201can ambiance of a lot of grief and a lot of fear, a lot of uncertainty\u201d following the September 6 attack.<\/p>\n

Archbishop In\u00e1cio Sa\u00fare added, \u201cWe fear the existence of terrorists, that they may attack other parts of Nampula Province at any given time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The member of the Institute of Consolata Missionaries (IMC) said that attacks in Nampula province began on September 2 when \u201cinsurgents attacked Namapa, in the District of Erati, Nampula Province.\u201d<\/p>\n

The insurgents who attacked the Comboni mission in Nacala Diocese \u201cmay be the same terrorist group that has been attacking Cabo Delgado,\u201d the Mozambican Archbishop told ACI Africa.<\/p>\n

He decried the lack of sufficient security measures to protect members of the Clergy and women and men Religious in Mozambique. He said, \u201cA lot more needs to be done, because there\u2019s no provision made for the protection of the religious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archbishop Sa\u00fare continued, \u201cI am sure the local authorities already had this information through the security forces of the country, which were under their control. But there are no, let\u2019s say, special measures for the protection of the religious missionary personnel; there are no special measures at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 62-year-old Archbishop of Nampula called on the Mozambican and international communities to \u201ctake these attacks seriously and help identify the root causes of this evil and find effective solutions, so that we can thus find an effective solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, history has taught us that when the terrorist attacks began in Cabo Delgado, it wasn\u2019t immediately taken very seriously to the point that it even spread into other provinces in the north of the country, from Cabo Delgado to Niassa and now to Nampula,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese attacks deserve a lot of attention from all of us, but particularly from the authorities, who also have the duty to protect the people,\u201d Archbishop Sa\u00fare said about the terrorist attacks, which began in October 2017 in Mozambique\u2019s Northmost Province of Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

In their September 7 statement, SACBC members say they are praying \u201cfor the conversion of those who murder innocent people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pray that the Lord will strengthen you and that you continue to be a sign of hope and peace in a rapidly deteriorating situation,\u201d the Catholic Bishops of the three-nation Conference say in their message to Bishops, Priests and women and men Religious in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

They add, \u201cWe are \u2018one body in Christ\u2019. Your pain is our pain. We stand by you in solidarity and unceasing prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n
