Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mouthwash can alter the oral microbiome and potentially damage teeth, a study from scientists at the University of Plymouth has shown.<\/p>\n

The use of mouthwash helps to keep breath fresh and avoids the bacteria in between the corners of the teeth but it has adverse effects within a short period.<\/p>\n

According to a publication by New Atlas the use of mouthwash for one week can alter the oral microbiome, lowering saliva pH and increasing acidity.<\/p>\n

The research shows that chlorhexidine mouthwash notably reduced microbial diversity in the mouth after seven days.<\/p>\n

\u201cMouthwash use increased the abundance of Neisseria, Streptococcus and Granulicatella bacteria while lowering the abundance of Actinomyces,\u201d the publication said.<\/p>\n

The research findings revealed that the usage of mouthwash causes a drop in the environmental PH levels in the mouth.<\/p>\n

The lead of the research team Raul Bescos said that there is a lack of knowledge and literature behind the use of the products.<\/p>\n

\u201cChlorhexidine mouthwash is widely used but research has been limited to its effect on a small number of bacteria linked to particular oral diseases, and most has been carried out in vitro,\u201d Bescos said.<\/p>\n
