Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi warns that climate is real and has already become an integral part of everyone\u2019s life since it affects all planet earth inhabitants.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, if we want to survive and prevail as human species we have to assume that any initiative, economic and social venture will have to take into account adaptation to climate change otherwise our development will never be sustainable\u201d, warned the president.<\/p>\n

Nyusi, who was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Southern Africa Ministerial Meeting on Integrated Early Warning and Early Action System Initiative, held in Maputo, stressed that its crucial to join efforts for the provision and implementation of meteorological and climate services to lessen the impact of climate change and ensure better management of climate risks and boost resilience to climate change.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a country we are in a region prone to extreme weather events. Therefore, we have no way out but to embark on measures aimed at sustainable development\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

For Nyusi, the new initiative Integrated Early Warning and Early Action Systems for Southern Africa is timely and deserves the support and full commitment of all.<\/p>\n

The meeting focused on the production and ratification of the Maputo Declaration, by the meteorological and disaster management officials representing SADC Heads of State and Government.<\/p>\n

The president also called for a commitment from member countries to assume a more active role in reducing people\u2019s vulnerability to extreme weather and climate change.<\/p>\n

The implementation of the Maputo Declaration, he explained, should be an additional support to human, financial and infrastructure capabilities of the entities responsible for early warning, namely the Meteorological and Hydrological Services, as well as the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Agencies, to ensure that decisive measures are taken, leading to the creation of community resilience and reduce the impact and effects of climate change on humans and planet earth.<\/p>\n

This concern was also voiced by Mozambican Transport and Communications Minister, Mateus Magala, on Monday (05) during the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

As for Mozambique, Nyusi recalled that its geographical location puts the country in a situation of cyclical vulnerability to climate change events, with phenomena such as droughts, floods, tropical cyclones that affect all regions.<\/p>\n

He stressed that these phenomena have increased in frequency and intensity with devastating impact on people\u2019s lives and business.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, the new initiative Integrated Early Warning and Early Action Systems in Southern Africa is timely and deserves our support and full commitment\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSADC has established a Humanitarian Emergency Operations Center, hosted by Mozambique in the strategic port city of Nacala, in the northern province of Nampula, from where responses and efforts to cope with disasters can be coordinated\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

In this SADC effort, Nyusi said, the support and collaboration of agencies, funds and programs of the UN system, intergovernmental organizations, development partners, civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations is important and welcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly acting together we will achieve effective and global adaptation and resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change, avoiding and minimizing losses and damages associated with meteorological phenomena\u201d, he stressed, adding that \u201cnow is time to act.\u201d<\/p>\n
