Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday called on energy giants to resume work on gas projects in the country\u2019s restive north, which has been plagued by jihadist attacks since 2017.<\/p>\n

French oil giant TotalEnergies halted a $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project last year, after a deadly raid on the coastal town of Palma.<\/p>\n

Nyusi told a two-day gas and energy conference in Maputo that the security situation is \u201cnow better\u201d than before the attack, with \u201cgreater stability,\u201d in the surrounding region allowing for works to resume.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider it pertinent that the possibility of resuming the development of onshore construction work \u2026 be considered,\u201d Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will have more specific meetings with the operators to discuss other measures needed to maintain safety,\u201d Nyusi added.<\/p>\n

Some 3,100 troops from several African countries were deployed in the northern Cabo Delgado province after the Palma attack in March 2021.<\/p>\n

Calm has gradually returned to the town and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n

But TotalEnergies told AFP that its \u201cwork will resume once security and safety conditions have been permanently restored in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vast natural gas deposits were discovered in Cabo Delgado in 2010, the largest ever found south of the Sahara.<\/p>\n

Once tapped, Mozambique could become one of the world\u2019s 10 biggest exporters.<\/p>\n

The Muslim-majority province has attracted mega-projects operated by TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and ENI.<\/p>\n

But the jihadist insurgency has stalled progress.<\/p>\n

Of the three projects, only ENI\u2019s is on track. The Italian company\u2019s LNG facility is entirely offshore.<\/p>\n

The conflict has killed more than 4,100 people over the past five years, according to conflict watchdog ACLED.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands more have been displaced, the United Nations says.<\/p>\n
