Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi is demanding greater commitment from the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) in the fight against terrorism that has plagued the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.<\/p>\n

For this purpose, Nyusi says that it is required a rigorous and properly structured commitment involving all the means at FADM\u2019s disposal in order to put the enemy on the defensive for the final assault.<\/p>\n

According to Nyusi, Mozambicans have the utmost confidence in the Armed Defence Forces, therefore they expect an adequate response for any threats to the homeland, including terrorism.<\/p>\n

Nyusi, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), was speaking this Thursday in Maputo to high ranking military officers, who had come to greet him as part of the celebrations of the 58th anniversary of the start of the war against colonialism and the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique Day, which is being commemorated on 25 September.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe country is today the target of terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n

However, Mozambicans have the utmost confidence in the Armed Forces to provide an adequate response to any threats to the homeland.<\/p>\n

Terrorists attack populations, loot their property and destroy socio-economic infrastructures, hence the need to vigorously combat terrorism, since there can be no truce or contemplation in the fight against this evil,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that terrorism is a challenge that adds up to others such as the permanent readiness to respond to extreme weather events that Mozambique faces cyclically due to its geographical location.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all aware that in the face of your heavy fire, in partnership with other forces on the ground, the Armed Forces have managed to dislodge the enemy from the regions it occupied.<\/p>\n

Now they are scattered in small groups seeking to launch incursions aimed at spreading terror among the population\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

Nyusi says that he is aware of friends and brothers willing to fight side by side with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, but he reminds it is primary responsibility of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) to defend the country.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that the support of the Rwandan forces and the SADC Military Mission to Mozambique and other partners has been remarkable, but the definitive solution for the ills afflicting the country must come from the selfless delivery of the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must continue to empower the FADM and the Defence and Security Forces so that they can fully assume all their missions as defenders of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, because our partners will not stay here forever,\u201d warned the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day our friends who are fighting alongside us withdraw they should feel proud to realise that their support was crucial to build sustainable capacity building of our FDS which will enable us to fight terrorism effectively and bravely.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the government is well aware of the needs for continued investment to build a robust army with motivated and well-equipped men and women.<\/p>\n
