Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The entry of rebels in the far north of Nampula province has awoken the ghosts of a past of terror among displaced people from Cabo Delgado who have taken refuge there and hope that these attacks will be the last they hear of.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am afraid because I have seen them [in Cabo Delgado] burn houses and kill,\u201d Francisco Barnab\u00e9, 48, told Lusa in the rehousing centre of Corrane, 60 kilometres from the provincial capital of Nampula in northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Born in Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, Francisco Barnab\u00e9 has been among the 8,000 people who fled the terror since 2020 and are now trying to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n

But the recent rebel incursions into the districts of Er\u00e1ti and Memba raise new concerns.<\/p>\n

Although they have occurred more than 100 kilometres from the administrative post where the Corrane resettlement centre is based, it shows a movement southwards, closer to the displaced people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are afraid because we hear the stories that other displaced people tell us,\u201d young Albertino Malieque admits to Lusa.<\/p>\n

So far, the districts affected by these rebel incursions are on the banks of the L\u00fario River, the natural border between Nampula and Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

Similar to what they did for years in Cabo Delgado, the rebels have destroyed infrastructure, housing and killed a so far unknown number of people, including an Italian nun murdered during an attack on the Catholic mission in Chipende.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people who are in the rehousing centre here in Nampula are already returning to their areas of origin\u201d because \u201cthey have been starving, but they are also a little afraid of the news of the attack on Memba\u201d, Jo\u00e3o Lu\u00eds Matias, secretary of one of the three neighbourhoods that make up the community of displaced people in Corrane, explained to Lusa.<\/p>\n

At the gates of the centre, there are already people who, taking what they can, are looking for transport to return to Cabo Delgado \u2013 where a military intervention has given back hope of stabilisation \u2013 but there are also those who prefer to continue living in this new community, far from the place where they witnessed \u201cbarbarities\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard that Nampula is also registering attacks, but I\u2019m not leaving here just because of what I heard. I left Cabo Delgado because I saw the attacks,\u201d Augusto Samuel, 44, a peasant who left Moc\u00edmboa da Praia in 2020, declares to Lusa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going back to Cabo Delgado because Nampula is also Mozambique. I\u2019m not lost here\u201d, explains Safe Jo\u00e3o, another displaced person from Moc\u00edmboa who has been living in Corrane for two years.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary data given to Lusa by the government of Nampula, only in the district of Er\u00e1ti, the new incursions caused nearly 10 thousand displaced persons.<\/p>\n

The province was already receiving people from Cabo Delgado seeking refuge since the beginning of the armed insurgency in Northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The situation is described as stable in Nampula, with the defence and security forces in an \u201cintensive deployment\u201d to halt the rebels, according to provincial secretary of state, Mety Gondola, in an interview with Lusa on Monday.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed violence, with some attacks claimed by extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

The insurgency has led to a military response since a year ago by forces from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects.<\/p>\n

There are about 800,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and about 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n
