Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Rio Ferdinand says it is \u201cdisheartening\u201d that racism remains a problem in football after Richarlison had a banana thrown at him in Brazil\u2019s 5-1 friendly win over Tunisia.<\/p>\n

The Tottenham striker was celebrating a goal when the incident occurred in Paris. Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said authorities must do more to combat racism in the sport.<\/p>\n

He described it as \u201canother day racism is OK and welcomed in football\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying football can change or cure racism because I would be an idiot to think that,\u201d Ferdinand said on his Youtube channel.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when you\u2019ve got your own kids waking up and saying: \u2018Dad, have you seen that banana thrown on the pitch at Richarlison?\u2019 It\u2019s madness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richarlison said on Tuesday that racism will continue \u201cevery day and everywhere\u201d unless authorities \u201cpunish\u201d the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball can play a good part in highlighting issues and standing together to make the authorities and powers that be put things in place to protect people,\u201d Ferdinand added. \u201cBut it ain\u2019t happening. It\u2019s disheartening.\u201d<\/p>\n

He compared reaction to the incident to the criticism Richarlison received for his showboating against Nottingham Forest. The 25-year-old performed some kick-ups in the closing minutes of the match and was subsequently tackled by frustrated Forest forward Brennan Johnson.<\/p>\n

Ferdinand suggested the reaction to the two incidents was disproportionate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was probably as much vitriol and hysteria on social media and in the media in general with this banana incident, racism incident, as there was when Richarlison was doing kick-ups when he got smashed,\u201d said Ferdinand. \u201cLet that sink in. It is mad and crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifa is investigating the incident and said it has a \u201cclear, zero-tolerance stance\u201d against racist behaviour.<\/p>\n

Tottenham have also condemned the abuse and offered Richarlison support. The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) said that if the identity of the person who threw the banana is Tunisian then \u201cwe apologise on behalf of him and on behalf of all Tunisians present at the stadium\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Ferdinand said action from the federations is not strong enough, citing an incident earlier in September when Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior received racist abuse from opposition fans during the derby match against Atletico Madrid.<\/p>\n

La Liga condemned the abuse at the time, saying hate speech had \u201cno place in the league\u201d. But Ferdinand argued it was not enough and that racism is \u201cwelcomed in football\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see the federations coming out and absolutely backing these players and going absolutely against it or a big press conference being called and saying \u2018we ain\u2019t having this\u2019,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Brazil captain Thiago Silva also said responses to racism need to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a shame, it\u2019s difficult to see images like that, unfortunately it seems that we can\u2019t change people\u2019s mentality,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope they will realise that this doesn\u2019t work. It\u2019s the past, we have to change.\u201d<\/p>\n
