Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>With the signing, yesterday, of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, the Mozambican and the Tanzanian defence forces will begin to share intelligence and classified information in the context of combating transnational crime.<\/p>\n

The bilateral agreement will reinforce the tracking of terrorist actions and other transnational crimes that threaten the peace in Mozambique and Tanzania.<\/p>\n

Mozambique\u2019s Minister of National Defence, Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o Chume, says there is an urgent need to improve the capacity of the two countries to filter, track and prevent any transnational activity which constitutes a threat to peace and tranquillity in the two countries, which share an extensive border.<\/p>\n

According to Minister Chume, the signing of the agreement on the sharing of intelligence and information, plus training and joint operations, between the Armed Forces of Tanzania and Mozambique, opens space for more visible results in the fight against criminal activity which affects the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe instruments we signed provide the legal framework for the implementation of the planned actions, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the fight against terrorism in some districts of Cabo Delgado province and reinforcing border security between Mozambique and Tanzania,\u201d Chume explained, noting that both countries must be more vigilant regarding the infiltration of terrorists into their territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals with obscure agendas who are hostile to the growth of Mozambique and Tanzania cannot continue to take advantage of the courtesy, hospitality and cordiality of our peoples to establish themselves in our territories and carry out subversive actions,\u201d Chume said.<\/p>\n

For her part, Tanzania\u2019s Defence Minister Stergomena Tax said that the agreement showed her country\u2019s readiness to fight transnational crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are adamant that all the agreements signed here will be implemented faithfully and on time,\u201d Tax said. \u201cThis includes areas in which we are pleased to continue to cooperate, and we have come up with proposals to eradicate terrorism, violent extremism and maritime piracy that we will implement swiftly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stergomena Tax urged her peers to commit themselves to the implementation of this agreement and others in the areas of defence, public security and state security.<\/p>\n

The ministers were speaking this Thursday at the end of the Ministerial Meeting of the Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security between Mozambique and Tanzania, an event that was preceded by a meeting of defence and security experts focused on sharing experiences and developing ways of implementing cooperation.<\/p>\n
