Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique and Tanzania on Thursday agreed to establish a especial police unit which will be responsible for drawing strategies to combat terrorism that has plagued the northern province of Cabo Delgado since 2017.<\/p>\n

This is one of the decisions announced on Thursday in Maputo by Mozambique\u2019s Defence Minister, Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o Chume, at the end of the Ministerial Meeting of the IV Session of the Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security Mozambique-Tanzania.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe noted with satisfaction in sharing of information and police intelligence between the migration authorities, the need to establish a police technical unit to draw strategies to combat terrorism and violent extremism,\u201d said the minister.<\/p>\n

Besides the fight against terrorism, according to Chume, both countries also agreed on exchange of visits, exchange of experts, joint prevention of cross-border crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo this end, we have just signed Agreements on Intelligence and Information Sharing, Training and Joint Operations, all between the Armed Forces of both countries,\u201d Chume declared.<\/p>\n

On the negative side, both countries noted the lack of implementation of some activities agreed upon in 2021, namely implementation of the One Stop Border Post Concept and Agreement on Transfer of Convicted Persons.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also reviewed, with concern, the meetings between authorities dealing with refugees, border reaffirmation, exchange of military information on prison services, police and military training and joint police and military operations,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

The IV Session of the Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security between Mozambique and Tanzania \u2013 a three day event \u2013 comes a week after the signing of a cooperation agreement on Defence and Security, during the visit of the Tanzanian President to Mozambique, Suluhu Hassan.<\/p>\n
