Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday reiterated that the process of Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) of the residual force of Renamo, the largest opposition party in Mozambique, will be concluded by the end of this year, a major step towards a lasting peace.<\/p>\n

Nyusi was speaking at the Mozambican Heroes Square in Maputo during the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the General Peace Agreement.<\/p>\n

Signed in Rome on 04 October 1992 by the then head of state, Joaquim Chissano, and the late Renamo leader, Afonso Dhlakama, the Roma Agreement put an ended to the 16-year war between the government and Renamo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made progress in the DDR process, and so far we have demobilised over 4,000 former Renamo guerrillas out of a total of 5,221 registered. In the towns, villages and localities the popular mood is satisfactory and gratifying with our Renamo brothers,\u201d Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect that by the end of this year we will be able to conclude the DDR process, which will be a milestone in the implementation of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Constant talks between the government and Renamo, according to Nyusi, have contributed to build mutual trust. According to the President over the last 30 years Mozambicans have learned to live together, respecting political and ideological differences.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have learned to live together and to respect differences. The agreements allowed Mozambicans to participate in electoral spaces. These actions contribute to build a Mozambican society eager to embrace development through continuous promotion of peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nyusi called also for the need to promote Mozambique\u2019s history without fear to reach out younger and future generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur history of conflict and peace must be told because the people who made it are still alive. If it is not told, it risks being adulterated,\u201d said Nyusi, praising the role of religious institutions in the promotion of peace and reconciliation among Mozambicans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe express our gratitude to our cooperation partners who, with their invaluable support, have contributed for us to achieve our goals in all sectors\u201d, said Nyusi.<\/p>\n

The history of the Peace Accord, according to Nyusi, \u201cdocuments the multiplicity of efforts by various living forces in search of peace. Our history should be told without fearing nightmares, because it is part of Mozambicans. Peace is worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President also said that the government is focused on designing strategies for the continued development of the country across all sectors of activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reaffirm our commitment to the country\u2019s development agenda. We extend our recognition and appreciation to those who, over the last three decades, have selflessly contributed to the promotion of peace and development of the country, on different fronts: social, political, economic, cultural and sports, honouring our country with responsibility and sacrifice, \u201csaid the president.<\/p>\n
