Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Virgil van Dijk says the well-being of players in the UK is \u201cforgotten\u201d amid criticism of Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold.<\/p>\n

There has been an intense focus on the defender\u2019s recent performances after an indifferent start to the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone here is very good to praise a player very high up to the sky and let them fall as hard as they can,\u201d said Netherlands defender Van Dijk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what we, as players, have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Dijk, 31, added: \u201cWe forget about the wellbeing of players, we forget about that stuff and everyone is talking about how we should all accept it. For him to just carry on working \u2014 not only him but other players as well \u2014 and deal with it and show a reaction is what we need, all of us.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo do that I think it\u2019s important that we back him and the manager and the club and the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liverpool have struggled for form generally this season \u2014 winning just two of seven Premier League games \u2014 but Alexander-Arnold\u2019s displays have been of particular focus.<\/p>\n

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said Alexander-Arnold, 23, has the potential to be one of the world\u2019s best right-backs if he worked on his defending.<\/p>\n

After last month\u2019s Nations League games, England manager Gareth Southgate said the Liverpool defender\u2019s \u201call-round game\u201d was behind that of Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier, potentially putting his World Cup place in doubt.<\/p>\n

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp responded by labelling Alexander-Arnold \u201cexceptional\u201d and saying he would pick him in any team he managed.<\/p>\n

Speaking after Tuesday\u2019s Champions League win against Rangers, where he scored a free-kick, Alexander-Arnold said he was just focusing on performing on the pitch.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what, I always try and think positively,\u201d he told BT Sport. \u201cPeople will say things but for me it is about going out there and helping the team win games. It\u2019s been a slow start to the season for me but I\u2019m looking forward to the rest of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Dijk believes the debate surrounding Alexander-Arnold is typical of what modern day players have to put up with, unlike those from previous eras.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the players from 10, 20 years ago were under the microscope we are at the moment there would also be a lot of players struggling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will always come to you and it\u2019s not easy to just completely shut it out and keep your head down – or you need to live under a rock and just turn up for training and then go back home and go to the game and go back home. We have to deal with it but it is not easy, let\u2019s put it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
