Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Norwegian government pledged to disburse the sum of 3 million US dollars aimed at assisting Mozambique in its efforts to counter transnational organized crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo that effect, on 6 October 2022, the Kingdom of Norway, through its Embassy in Maputo, pledged to extend its financial contribution to UNODC in Mozambique with a grant of approximately USD 3 million\u201d, reads a joint statement released this Monday.<\/p>\n

The signing ceremony featured participation of the UNODC Head of Office in Mozambique and Malawi, Marco Teixeira and the Norwegian Ambassador to Mozambique, Haakon Gram-Johannessen.<\/p>\n

Mozambique is making significant efforts to strengthen its responses to the multilayered threats facing the country and has requested UNODC\u2019s assistance in building the capacity of the criminal justice system to counter terrorism, money laundering and organized crime.<\/p>\n

The Government has also demonstrated strong support towards UNODC\u2019s work on these issues, through the implementation of the \u201cMaputo Roadmap\u201d the document that defines the framework of UNODC\u2019s intervention in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

During the ceremony, Teixeira recalled the significant progress made since the endorsement of the Maputo Roadmap on countering transnational crime in the country, noting, however, that challenges remain, with criminal enterprises changing modus operandi and constantly finding new opportunities to enlarge their profits.<\/p>\n

On this backdrop, Teixeira acknowledged that Norway financial assistance to UNODC is decisive in enabling the implementation of activities in support of national partners.<\/p>\n

On his part, Gram-Johannessen reiterated Norway\u2019s commitment towards the Maputo Roadmap and the Government\u2019s efforts to prevent and counter organized crime with emphasis on strengthening of the judicial chain and the rule of law. We are proud partners in this undertaking, yet the challenges are considerable and we are therefore gearing up efforts, said the ambassador.<\/p>\n
