Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Do you struggle to remember passwords? Or even create one?<\/p>\n

Well, starting today (Wednesday), Google has announced that users can now create and use passkeys on Android devices and developers can build passkey support on the web with Chrome.<\/p>\n

Passkeys are a new type of login credential that removes the need for passwords.<\/p>\n

The authentication requires either biometric authentication, Touch ID, Face ID, Fingerprint or voice recognition.<\/p>\n

Biometric authentication is a cybersecurity process that verifies a user’s identity using their unique biological characteristics as their password.<\/p>\n

The firm says this is part of a push for the widespread adoption of passkeys as they are a more secure alternative to the good old password.<\/p>\n

Passwords are a little outdated because if someone gets your password, a single factor of authentication, they can often gain access to your online accounts. That is why many apps have a Two-factor authentication but it is not also quite secure.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Apple, Google, and Microsoft announced that they will be adopting the FIDO standard for passkeys on all major platforms by 2023.<\/p>\n

How pass keys work is simple.<\/b><\/p>\n

Step 1<\/p>\n

It first turns your smartphone into a passkey that can be used to log in to a website.<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/p>\n

These passkeys are then synced through the Google Password Manager for easy access across your devices and on your computer, as well.<\/p>\n

Google will also roll out separate passkeys for website use only. With this, developers will be able to implement it in their apps, and even support passkeys that may have already been used to log in to the same service in the user\u2019s browser.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is another important milestone, but our work is not done. Google remains committed to a world where users can choose where their passwords, and now passkeys, are stored,\u201d Google said in a blog post.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease stay tuned for more updates from us in the next year as we introduce changes to Android, enabling third-party credential managers to support passkeys for their users.\u201d<\/p>\n

To try this today, developers can enrol in the Google Play Services beta and use Chrome Canary.<\/p>\n

Both features will be generally available on stable channels later this year.<\/p>\n
