Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican government on Friday reaffirmed its commitment for a peaceful resolution for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n

This is the main message Mozambican Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Manuel Gonc\u0327alves, conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart, Maksym Subkh, during the first session of Political Consultations between the two countries, held in Maputo on Friday.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, according to a statement from Mozambique\u2019s Foreign Affairs Ministry sent to AIM, Goncalves urged all Parties to engage in a constructive dialogue to end the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u2018He assured Mozambique\u2019s engagement, when it takes its seat as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, in supporting initiatives leading to a negotiated and peaceful resolution to this conflict,\u2019 the statement said.<\/p>\n

The document noted that during the political consultation session, representatives of both governments shared information on the political, security and socio-economic situation in both countries \u2018and discussed mechanisms leading to strengthening relations of friendship and cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation made it known that the political, economic and social situation in Mozambique is stable despite some challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, impact of climate change and terrorism that, since 2017, has affected some districts of Cabo Delgado province,\u2019 reads the statement.<\/p>\n

Gonc\u0327alves also informed about the negative impact of terrorist attacks, as well as the set of holistic measures that the Mozambican government is carrying out to address this threat to peace and national security.<\/p>\n

In this context, he highlighted the building capacity on security; restoration of essential services, creation of conditions for socio-economic development in affected areas and in the entire region, provision of humanitarian assistance, strengthening of regional and international cooperation on defence.<\/p>\n

In turn, the Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister explained the causes, evolution and negative impact of the current conflict in his country, highlighting the millions of Ukrainian refugees, civilian deaths, and destruction of infrastructures, among others.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian diplomat \u2018congratulated Mozambique for its historic election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, for the 2023-2024 biennium, and augured successes in the exercise of the country\u2019s mandate in this important body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Both deputy ministers agreed to continue working together, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries, having identified the sectors of education, science and technology, human capital development, promotion of Ukrainian investments and technology transfer to Mozambique\u2019s agricultural sector\u201d, says the note.<\/p>\n

It adds that the Parties also stressed on the need for both countries to strengthen the legal framework regulating bilateral cooperation, having committed to complete the General Cooperation Agreement.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Political Consultations session took place in an environment of openness and frankness a sign of mutual recognition of the strong ties of friendship and brotherhood that unite both people and countries,\u2019 it notes.<\/p>\n
