Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s cabinet approved on TUesday a decree for the creation of a disaster management fund, the government spokesman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe disaster management fund is a bank account managed by the National Institute for Management and Disaster Risk Reduction [INGD],\u201d Filima\u0303o Suaze told the media moments after the weekly cabinet meeting in Maputo.<\/p>\n

According to the source, the disaster management fund aims to \u201csupport the costs of bodies\u201d linked to the management of natural disasters in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is actually an updating of the law,\u201d the cabinet spokesman explained.<\/p>\n

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from April to October.<\/p>\n

In the 2020\/2021 rainy season, the country was plagued by extreme weather events highlighted by storm Chalane and cyclones Eloise and Guambe and other weeks of heavy rain and flooding.<\/p>\n

The 2018\/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in memory in Mozambique: 714 people died, including 648 victims of two of the largest cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) ever to hit the country.<\/p>\n
