Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>It was only a few months ago that Antonio Conte was talking about \u201cmiracles\u201d and celebrating Champions League qualification.<\/p>\n

Now the spotlight is on the Tottenham boss for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

Back-to-back Premier League defeats after a solid start to the season have left third-placed Spurs five points off the top having played one game more.<\/p>\n

They also have much-improved Newcastle, 2-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, breathing down their neck in fourth. Conte declined the chance to speak about Newcastle\u2019s contentious opening goal, choosing to use his post-match interview to seemingly send a message to Tottenham\u2019s board.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need time and patience and, also for sure, money,\u201d Conte told BBC Radio 5 live while answering questions about Tottenham\u2019s third defeat in five Premier League games.<\/p>\n

As recently as August, Conte said Spurs needed at least two more transfer windows to compete for the Premier League title.<\/p>\n

The Italian, who was appointed in November 2021, reiterated his message after the Newcastle defeat and said Spurs \u201cneeded time\u201d to improve the quality of the squad.<\/p>\n

Spurs were missing Brazil forward Richarlison, Sweden winger Dejan Kulusevski, Argentina defender Cristian Romero and Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg because of injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy only worries in this moment is we have to try to keep the fingers crossed and don\u2019t have injuries because we are not a team with such a depth of squad to face competitions like the Premier League and Champions League, but this is not something against the club,\u201d added Conte.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor sure there are players that need to rest for two days to recover because we have players who for them this was seven games in a row and we don\u2019t have the possibility to make rotation in this moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I spoke before I always said look, we have just started the process for Tottenham to bring Tottenham into the best position to be more competitive to fight for something important, we have just started.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this reason we need to cope with this situation. For me it is not easy, it is not simple but we have to cope and to manage the situation with experience and stay together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spurs dropped points in a Premier League home game for the first time since April (0-1 v Brighton), with the defeat by Newcastle ending a run of eight consecutive league wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.<\/p>\n

On a bad day for Tottenham, Newcastle took the lead in contentious circumstances.<\/p>\n

Callum Wilson scored with an excellent lob from outside the box after colliding with keeper Hugo Lloris.<\/p>\n

The goal was awarded after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check for a foul and handball.<\/p>\n

Conte declined to comment when asked about it \u2014 except for describing it as a \u2018strange situation\u2019 – but former England keeper Ben Foster said on social media it should have been disallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Callum Wilson goal HAS to be disallowed,\u201d added Foster on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GK is the player in control of the ball, if he beats the striker to the ball, and the striker is in the way, unfortunately it\u2019s a foul.\u201d<\/p>\n

But former Republic of Ireland forward Clinton Morrison disagreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWilson just stands his ground. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a foul,\u201d he added on BBC Radio 5 Live.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s controversial but for me the goal had to stand. Hugo Lloris should have just moved Wilson out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ex-Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer, added: \u201cLloris had to be stronger, it was never a foul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Bournemouth forward Wilson told BBC Sport he had every right to challenge Lloris for the ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think sometimes keepers get too much love [from referees]. But he chested it and dived into me really, and I\u2019ve carried on and put it in,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Newcastle have spent more than \u00a3200m on players since Eddie Howe took over as manager in November 2021.<\/p>\n

The investment seems to be paying off with the Magpies moving into the top four after victory at Spurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is if you associate with money it takes away credit from the players,\u201d Howe said after the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the players were here anyway. Credit the players for the performance, don\u2019t look at how the team was put together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a long way to go. It\u2019s a very tight division.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re enjoying the moment but we won\u2019t get ahead of ourselves. We\u2019ll try to win. I\u2019m sure people will talk us up but I don\u2019t want to put any external pressure on my players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports: \u201cEddie Howe deserves so much credit. Maybe people wanted the superstar name as manager, but he has done magnificently. They are going places, they have the fan base, the infrastructure and the money.\u201d<\/p>\n
