Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican branch of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, MISA Moc\u0327ambique, today reported the detention of a local journalist in Cabo Delgado, calling it an \u201cattack\u201d against journalism.<\/p>\n

\u201cArlindo Chissale, a journalist of the online portal \u2018Pinnacle News\u2019, has been detained and held incommunicado since last Tuesday (25 October) in an act allegedly carried out by the government authorities of the district of Balama,\u201d the MISA statement reads.<\/p>\n

The NGO demands Chissale\u2019s \u201cimmediate release\u201d and says it intends to find out who is responsible for \u201dthis attack on journalistic independence\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cContacted by the journalist\u2019s relatives, Balama district administrator Edson Lino confirmed the fact of Chissale\u2019s arrest, and said that he would be released,\u201d adds MISA, but \u201cinformation is scarce\u201d.<\/p>\n

MISA cites sources close to the victim who say that Chissale was \u201ccapturing images of public institutions in the district\u201d when he was arrested.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe capture of images of public institutions by journalists is a procedure typical of the profession,\u201d MISA explains.<\/p>\n

Chissale is the latest case of detention and intimidation of journalists by the authorities in Cabo Delgado since the beginning of the armed insurgency five years ago.<\/p>\n

Ibraimo Abu Mbaruco, from Radio Comunitaria de Palma, disappeared in April, 2020, after being surrounded by soldiers, and was never seen again.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Amade Abubacar and Germano Adriano were detained on charges of violating state secrets and inciting disorder and mistreated by the authorities for four months, in a case contested by the United Nations and other organisations.<\/p>\n
