Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) announced in Maputo on Monday the arrest of a 53 year old Nigerian man accused of drug trafficking.<\/p>\n

According to the Sernic spokesperson in Maputo, Hilario Lole, the man in question (whom he did not name) has been wanted by the Dutch authorities since 2010. At that time, he was charged with possession of 23.4 kilos of cocaine. Via Interpol, the Dutch police issued an international warrant for the arrest of the Nigerian suspect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough Interpol, we received the international arrest warrant for this Nigerian.\u201d said Lole.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the investigations in Nigeria, he escaped, and hs whereabouts were unknown until he was detained in Maputo. The Mozambican authorities intercepted this citizen, and implemented the arrest warrant, which was in the possession of Sernic.<\/p>\n

Lole said that, when he was detained, the Nigerian identified himself using documents which the Mozambican authorities believe are forgeries. The name on the documents he was carrying is not his real name, said Lole.<\/p>\n

The man will now be extradited to Nigeria, and Lole said the case is now following the normal extradition procedures.<\/p>\n

Lole added that this case shows that the Mozambican authorities are attentive to all the movements of those criminals who want to use Mozambique as a refuge, as well as of Mozambicans who become involved in the world of crime.<\/p>\n

Asked whether the Nigerian has been involved in other crimes, Lole said Sernic is working with Interpol to ascertain his criminal record.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope to obtain clarification from the Nigerian police and from Interpol\u201d, he said. \u201cThis work will allow us to take subsequent procedures, if necessary\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Nigerian denied all the accusations against him, and told reporters he does not know why he is under arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why I\u2019ve been detained\u201d, he declared. \u201cI\u2019m not a drug trafficker. I\u2019ve been in Mozambique since January of this year, but the alleged trafficker has been wanted since 2010. I came to Mozambique in search of new opportunities\u201d
