Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s defence minister has praised the \u201cpositive results\u201d of the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, saying that the joint force fighting rebels in the north has created a \u201cbreak\u201d in the logistical capacity of the insurgents.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoint military operations led by the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM), the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIM) and Rwandan Defence Forces have achieved positive results in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, creating disruptions in the terrorists\u2019 combative and logistical capacity,\u201d said Cristo\u0301va\u0303o Chume, quoted yesterday in a press release from the Mozambican Defence Ministry.<\/p>\n

Minister Chume was speaking during a virtual African Union Peace and Security Council meeting on Monday (07-11).<\/p>\n

Although \u201cpositive\u201d results are being recorded, the defence minister continued, the reinforcement of aerial, land and maritime surveillance remains essential to stop the rebels who have been terrorizing northern Mozambique for five years.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Chume highlights the importance of more effective intelligence operations and improving the strategic projection capacity of government forces fighting the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently, the security situation in Mozambique is stable, and state institutions are fully operational. However, terrorism is still the greatest challenge to peace, security and territorial integrity,\u201d the note from the Ministry of Defence of Mozambique proclaims.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province has been terrorized by armed violence since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.<\/p>\n
