Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The newly appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Mozambique\u2019s Archdiocese of Maputo, Bishop Joa\u0303o Carlos Hatoa Nunes, has described his appointment as a surprise and called on the people of God in the Southern African nation to pray for him.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis appointed Bishop Nunes as Coadjutor Archbishop of the Mozambican Archdiocese on Tuesday, November 15.<\/p>\n

Archbishop Francisco Chimoio of Maputo Archdiocese made the announcement to Bishops, members of the Clergy, women and men Religious in Maputo Archdiocese, some Laity, and representatives of the Ecclesiastical Provinces in the Southern African nation during the 20th General Assembly of Caritas Mozambique.<\/p>\n

In an interview with ACI Africa correspondent in Mozambique shortly after his appointment was made public, Bishop Nunes said, \u201cIt was a surprise when Pope Francis asked me for this work here in the Archdiocese.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at it as a mission. God calls where He wants us to be and the mission flows,\u201d Bishop Nunes said during the November 15 interview.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican Catholic Church leader who started his Episcopal Ministry in July 2011 when he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo Archdiocese called for spiritual solidarity as he undertakes his new assignment as Archbishop-elect, with a right of succession.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to ask everyone who rejoices in this moment, also in this reality… to pray, and I count on everyone\u2019s support, above all in advice, in whatever it may be, so that the mission may take place and contribute to the greater glory of the Lord,\u201d said Bishop Nunes who, since 2017, has been serving as the Local Ordinary of Mozambique\u2019s Chimoio Diocese.<\/p>\n

Born in March 1968, the Coadjutor Archbishop-elect was ordained a Priest for Maputo Archdiocese in July 1995 after completing his philosophical and theological studies at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Maputo.<\/p>\n

He began his Episcopal Ministry in July 2011 when he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo Archdiocese and<\/p>\n

The Catholic Church leader who was assigned the Titular See of Amudarsa when he was ordained Bishop in July 2011 was, in January 2012, appointed Apostolic Administrator of Beira Archdiocese following the retirement of Archbishop Jaime Pedro Gonc\u0327alves.<\/p>\n

He was temporarily in charge of the Mozambican Metropolitan Ecclesiastical See until October 2012, when Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna, the member of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart who had been appointed as the Local Ordinary of Beira Archdiocese in June of the same year was Consecrated.<\/p>\n

Catholic Bishops in Mozambique have sent goodwill messages to the 54-year-old Catholic Church leader following his appointment as Coadjutor Archbishop of Maputo Archdiocese.<\/p>\n

\u201cI congratulate you Bishop Joa\u0303o Carlos on your appointment as the current Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Maputo,\u201d Bishop Alberto Vera Are\u0301jula of the Catholic Diocese of Nacala shared his congratulation message with ACI Africa correspondent in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Bishop Are\u0301jula also expressed gratitude to Archbishop Francisco Chimoio who has been at the helm of Maputo Archdiocese since February 2003 when he was Consecrated \u201cfor these long years of work in this Archdiocese. I think it is 20 years of work with commitment and dedication, with much faith in this church that we need strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his part, Bishop Anto\u0301nio Juliasse, the Local Ordinary of the Diocese of Pemba who previously served as Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo Archdiocese thanked Pope Francis \u201cfor being very attentive to the Church of Mozambique.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBishop Joa\u0303o Carlos has also worked here and the time is coming and the period in which the mission of Pastor in this Archdiocese must pass to another Bishop. I think it is a very healthy and very well-considered decision of the Holy Father to appoint Bishop Joa\u0303o Carlos as the Coadjutor Archbishop at this time, of the Archdiocese of Maputo,\u201d said Bishop Juliasse.<\/p>\n

The Local Ordinary of Pemba Diocese has also lauded the Archbishop of Maputo for his service saying, \u201cArchbishop Francisco Chimoio has done a very great job and is really a Pastor.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Coadjutor Archbishop-elect, Bishop Nunes is expected to succeed Archbishop Chimoio as the Local Ordinary of Maputo when the latter, the member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap.) who will be turning 75 on December 6, retires.<\/p>\n

Canon 401 \u00a71 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law requires that Catholic Archdiocesan\/Diocesan Bishops, including Cardinals, submit their resignation to the Holy Father on reaching the age of 75 years.<\/p>\n
