Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The areas of Mozambique affected by war in the north and by natural disasters in the centre and south face the greatest difficulties in accessing food, according to the latest humanitarian surveillance report in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn October, food insecurity was minimal for most rural households in Mozambique, thanks to their food reserves and some purchases,\u201d said the document from the Famine Early Warning Network (Fews network), which assists humanitarian operations.<\/p>\n

However, there are areas where the situation is different.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn areas affected by drought in southern and central Mozambique, in areas affected by cyclones in Nampula province and in Cabo Delgado, where there are conflicts, crises persist as food reserves are depleted after a significantly below average harvest,\u201d the document details.<\/p>\n

To deal with the situation, the World Food Programme (WFP) began providing humanitarian food assistance in October to over 22,500 people in the drought-affected regions (Gaza, Inhambane, Manica and Sofala).<\/p>\n

This aid is in addition to that already being provided in the north, by various partners, to around one million people affected by the armed insurgency.<\/p>\n

However, due to a lack of funds, rationing continues: the aid distributed covers only 40% of the daily needs of each beneficiary.<\/p>\n

The report predicts that the food situation of families in crisis will improve in the coming months.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a forecast of a regular rainy season, acute food insecurity will decrease to a situation of \u2018stress\u2019 or minimal insecurity as households access the new harvest in March and April 2023,\u201d it concluded.<\/p>\n
