Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>France defender Lucas Hernandez has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup because of the knee injury he picked up in the win against Australia.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old Bayern Munich left-back ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee in the defending champions\u2019 4-1 opening-game victory.<\/p>\n

Several key France players, including Real Madrid\u2019s Karim Benzema, were injured before the tournament started.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am extremely sorry for Lucas,\u201d said manager Didier Deschamps. \u201cWe are losing an important element. Lucas is a warrior and I have no doubt he will do everything possible to return to the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the group, I wish him the best possible recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The extent of Hernandez\u2019s injury was confirmed by an MRI scan on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

He went down clutching his knee in the 13th minute in the build-up to Australia\u2019s opening goal.<\/p>\n

Hernandez was replaced by brother Theo, who plays for AC Milan, and France recovered from going behind to take control of the Group D game.<\/p>\n

Goals from Adrien Rabiot, Kylian Mbappe and two from former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud secured a comfortable win.<\/p>\n

Ballon d\u2019Or winner Benzema, 34, was ruled out of his country\u2019s World Cup defence on Sunday – the opening day of the tournament – as a result of a thigh injury.<\/p>\n

He was not replaced, leaving France with 25 players, and Hernandez\u2019s injury means Deschamps now has a squad of 24.<\/p>\n

Midfielders Paul Pogba and N\u2019Golo Kante were not fit enough to be included in France\u2019s original 26-man pool.<\/p>\n

Paris St-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe withdrew last Monday after failing to recover from a hamstring problem and was replaced by Monaco\u2019s Axel Disasi.<\/p>\n

Two days later, RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku was ruled out after limping out of training, with Eintracht Frankfurt\u2019s Randal Kolo Muani called up as a replacement.<\/p>\n
