Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A fire destroyed part of the main building at the Casa do Gaiato in Mozambique on Thursday, along with donations including school supplies, clothing and kitchen utensils, Quite\u0301ria Torres, director of the institution, told Lusa on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst damage is to the structure and the electrical system of the main building,\u201d she said, noting that there were no injuries.<\/p>\n

The fire was probably caused by an electrical short circuit in the attic of the facility, which is located in Boane district, 50 kilometres south of Maputo.<\/p>\n

Quite\u0301ria Torres posted an appeal for help on social networks on Saturday with information about the fire and the home\u2019s main needs. The social support institution houses 154 boys up to the age of 18.<\/p>\n

The priority is to restore the structure before the start of the rainy season, as well as to resume electricity supply in the block housing the administrative services, kitchen and cafeteria, where there were food freezers and refrigerators, meanwhile moved to other blocks which still have energy.<\/p>\n

The fierce blaze \u201cmelted aluminium pans\u201d, and it was necessary \u201cto open holes in the walls\u201d in order to extinguish it, Torres said.<\/p>\n

Members of the Portuguese Association, the Academia do Bacalhau and others from the Portuguese community in Mozambique are already involved in efforts to mobilize support.<\/p>\n
