Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican police announced on Monday the arrest of two young former soldiers who threatened to join armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado province if the authorities did not accept their application to join a special police unit.<\/p>\n

The two young men were arrested in the city of Quelimane, Zambe\u0301zia province, in the centre of the country, after posting the offending messages on social media networks, provincial police spokesman Sidner Lonzo said.<\/p>\n

Lonzo said that, arguing that the only thing they knew how to do was shoot, they had also threatened to rob banks if the authorities did not incorporate them into a special police unit,
\nPolice are on the look-out for other young people involved in these acts. Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for five years with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts next to gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region and in the neighbouring province of Nampula.<\/p>\n

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n
