Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has provided humanitarian assistance to about 21,180 internally displaced people over the past six months, victims of terrorism that has been plaguing parts of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado since 2017.<\/p>\n

According to the ICRC\u2019s communications coordinator, Mariana Camaroti, the organization has distributed over 6,000 kits of household items, including buckets, mosquito nets and tarpaulins for shelter, among others, to 4,236 families from 14 towns in the province.<\/p>\n

Without giving any figures, Camaroti said that the organization has also made monetary donations to around 2,905 displaced people from the districts of Pemba, Metuge, and Montepuez, to meet their urgent basic needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo respond to the humanitarian consequences, we are providing emergency aid and sustainable programmes for 21,180 displaced people\u201d, Camaroti said, during a training session for journalists on Humanitarian Coverage of the Armed Conflict in Cabo Delgado, held on Thursday in Maputo.<\/p>\n

The ICRC is also cooperating with the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) to improve knowledge of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for the protection of civilians in conflict situations.<\/p>\n

Thanks to this cooperation, according to the source, about 400 army officers have been trained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe implementation of the memorandum of understanding, together with the Mozambican Defence Ministry, regarding the dissemination of knowledge about IHL has allowed greater interaction with other international armed forces\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

The two-day event is taking place under the slogan: \u201cHumanitarian Coverage in Cabo Delgado and Notions of IHL for Communication Professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

To strengthen health services, according to Camaroti, the ICRC supported the Ministry of Health in vaccination against Covid-19, benefiting about 1.4 million people in areas affected by terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n

In addition to health assistance, she added, humanitarian aid allowed the construction of 32 hand pumps and washing areas, in the island of Ibo and in the district of Montepuez, which improved access to water for 10,000 people.<\/p>\n
