Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The number of women murdered in the city of Beira continues to grow. On Sunday night, two men as yet unidentified raped and murdered a 40-year-old woman near her home in the Cera\u0302mica area.<\/p>\n

Her body was found on Monday morning (05-12), her capulana wrapped around her neck, as in previous murders, the head of the administrative post told Miramar.<\/p>\n

Joao Fernando urged the authorities to take action in the face of the number of similar killings.<\/p>\n

The two men went to the victim\u2019s house reportedly looking for a place to rent. Not suspecting any malice, the woman sent her 20-year-old daughter to the market and stayed home with her grand-daughter and the visitors.<\/p>\n

They then dragged her off into the bush, where they raped and killed her.<\/p>\n

When the daughter returned home, the grand-daughter said: \u201cGranny went with the two men\u201d, a neighbour told Miramar. The daughter followed in their tracks, but found her mother already dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least 33 women have been murdered under similar circumstances in Beira this year,\u201d wrote Zenaida Machado, a senior researcher in the Africa Division at Human Rights Watch in a comment on this most recent case.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the women were also raped, \u201cZenaida Machado writes.\u201dMany of them were sex workers. Police should move from talk to serious action. Women in Beira are living in fear. This is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
