Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A court in Mozambique<\/b>has sentenced two<\/b> former intelligence chiefs and the son<\/b> of a former Mozambican president to 12<\/b> years in prison in a massive corruption scandal known as the “hidden debt”.<\/b><\/p>\n

The former head of intelligence and state security, Grego\u0301rio Lea\u0303o<\/b>, and the former head of economic intelligence, Anto\u0301nio do Rosa\u0301rio<\/b>, along with Armando Ndambi Guebuza<\/b>, son of former president Armando Guebuza<\/b> were sentenced by a special court in the capital, Maputo<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The case, which involved $2<\/b> billion in secret loans from foreign banks to Mozambican state-owned companies, had plunged the country into a serious financial crisis.<\/p>\n

The case relates to debt contracted by the government in 2013<\/b> and 2014<\/b> without parliament approval that prompted the IMF<\/b> to intervene triggering a sovereign debt collapse<\/b> in 2016<\/b>.<\/p>\n

“Proceeding with the legal accumulation of the sentence and the material accumulation of the fine, in accordance with the provisions of Articles 102, subparagraphs 1 and 97, both of the Penal Code of 1986<\/b>, the accused Armando Ndambi Guebuza<\/b> is sentenced to a single sentence of 12<\/b> years of major prison, 12 years in prison and a fine of 102,000 meticais<\/b>,” declared Presiding judge, Efige\u0301nio Baptista.<\/p>\n

Former finance minister, Manuel Chang<\/b>, who signed off the loans, has been held in South Africa<\/b> since 2018<\/b>, pending extradition to the US<\/b> for allegedly using the US financial system to carry out the fraudulent scheme.<\/p>\n
