Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Minister of the Interior, Arsenia Massingue, on Thursday recognized that corruption is undermining her Ministry and must not be allowed to set down roots.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must remove everyone and everything that is gnawing away at us internally, preventing us from delivering the results that society expects from us\u201d, she said, at the closing session of a meeting of the Ministry\u2019s Coordinating Council.<\/p>\n

There should be no truce with the corrupt, said the Minister, because however well-adjusted and properly aligned the Ministry\u2019s plans and actions might be, if there were those inside the institution who did not share the same goals, \u201ccertainly our performance will not attain the desired objectives\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis factor demands from us a more aggressive and more active inspection at all levels, seeking to identify and remove from our ranks all those who have shown that that are not in line with our principles and values\u201d, she insisted.<\/p>\n

Massingue also demanded a quicker and more serious approach to disciplinary proceedings, obeying all the procedures envisaged in the law. \u201cWe must endow the sectors involved in this area with staff who are technically and professionally qualified for the job\u201d.<\/p>\n

She urged her Ministry\u2019s staff to guarantee that citizens can undertake their activities without feeling under threat, due to the wave of kidnappings that has hit Mozambican cities. Business people and investors, she said, should feel safe to invest, and obtain a return on their capital, without fearing for their lives and freedom.<\/p>\n

Massingue called for an end to all harassment and extortion of foreign citizens by members of the police and immigration authorities. \u201cForeigners should feel at ease when they interact with the immigration authorities, without needing middlemen and without feeling that they are being used as a source of personal revenue\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
