Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Washington, December 12, 2022 \u2013 This afternoon, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

President Malpass and President Nyusi discussed the ongoing efforts between the World Bank Group (WBG) and Mozambique in the areas of infrastructure, energy access, water, agriculture, and human capital. President Malpass highlighted the need for enhanced reforms toward restoring debt sustainability, enabling the private sector, and reducing fiscal risks from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the public sector pension scheme. In this context, President Malpass emphasized the urgency of restoring operational and financial viability of the national electricity utility company Electricidade de Moc\u0327ambique, which would help attract more private investment into energy sector and improve electricity access. President Malpass and President Nyusi also discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the Anti-Money Laundering\/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML\/CFT) provisions.<\/p>\n

President Malpass was glad to hear from President Nyusi about improvements in the security situation in Northern Mozambique and reaffirmed to President Nyusi the WBG\u2019s support for conflict prevention, resilience-building, recovery, and peacebuilding via IDA\u2019s Prevention and Resilience Allocation (PRA).<\/p>\n

President Malpass and President Nyusi discussed encouraging progress in the institutional reforms in the water sector and the recent approval of the national agriculture strategy. President Malpass and President Nyusi discussed Mozambique\u2019s efforts to address the impacts of the ongoing global food and fertilizer shortage, as well as the opportunity for a more market-based approach using e-Vouchers. President Malpass emphasized the upcoming regional Food Systems Resilience Program to support implementation of stronger agricultural extension services and boost agricultural productivity, as well as the WBG\u2019s support to the water sector through the Urban Water Security Project.<\/p>\n

President Malpass acknowledged President Nyusi for leadership on climate change and disaster risk management in the Southern Africa Region. President Malpass thanked President Nyusi for his support for the WBG\u2019s SCALE climate fund, which was launched at COP27 and will provide grant payments on a results basis to client countries for lowering greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, President Malpass and President Nyusi discussed support for Mozambique in its pioneering role within the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility in generating payments resulting from reduced deforestation and other initiatives to improve energy access and climate resilience, both in Mozambique and in the region.<\/p>\n
