Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The leader of the Mozambique\u2019s main opposition party, Renamo, said on Monday there had been a \u201csystematic breach of the peace agreement by the Mozambican government\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Renamo guerrillas already demobilised following the 2019 agreement \u201care still waiting for the fixing of pensions,\u201d an issue that has been repeatedly raised by the party, said Ossufo Momade, leader of the main opposition party.<\/p>\n

The leader was speaking in Maputo at the opening of Renamo\u2019s fourth National Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce again we demand from the government, in the person of the president of the country, the fulfilment of the Maputo Agreement, which he signed with his own hand,\u201d Momade said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an unequivocal sign of our commitment, we have already demobilised 4,001 of the 5,254 combatants, which corresponds to about 80%\u201d of what was planned, he added.<\/p>\n

According to Momade, of the total number of demobilised combatants, 46 were recruited to the Mozambican police force (PRM) and another list of 100 officers to be integrated into the country\u2019s defence and security forces was submitted to the government.<\/p>\n

The disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) process is part of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed on 6 August 2019 between the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade.<\/p>\n

The number of demobilised guerrillas presented yesterday by Renamo is below that announced in November by the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni.<\/p>\n

According to Manzoni, the disarmament process has now reached about 4,700 guerrillas, or about 90% of the total 5,221 planned.<\/p>\n

The fourth meeting of the Renamo National Council took place on Monday, on the brink of a new year, 2023, when local elections are scheduled for Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Among the issues to be addressed at the meeting, the party president announced that the new Renamo Secretary General would be known, which in fact happened as the party ratified the appointment of Clementina Bomba to the post.<\/p>\n
