Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The International Press Institute (IPI) has described independent media in Mozambique are under \u201cpressure\u201d and subject to \u201cstrong government controls and political interference\u201d in a report out this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the main conclusions of a four-day mission to Mozambique was that journalism is under pressure,\u201d IPI said in the report, which is based on research carried out on the ground in August and which has now been published.<\/p>\n

According to the report, several journalists and civil society groups in Mozambique expressed concern about the \u201cshrinking space\u201d for action and \u201cworsening climate\u201d for independent journalism in the country \u201csince the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, took office in 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n

IPI also denounced the \u201cconstant erosion of the already fragile press freedom environment\u201d as well as restrictions on access to information and independent coverage of issues of public interest, such as corruption and armed violence in Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

\u201cRapid action is required in order to strengthen the protection of press freedom and reinforce support for the main democratic institutions in Mozambique,\u201d the institution said.<\/p>\n

According to IPI, the media in Mozambique operates under an \u201cuncertain and unclear\u201d legal and regulatory environment, whose implementation is \u201cweak\u201d, which contributes to \u201cincreasing restrictions on press freedom\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe implementation of these guarantees is weak and the press in Mozambique is instead subject to strong informal government controls and political interference,\u201d it stressed.<\/p>\n

The institution also expressed concern about the \u201cpattern of impunity\u201d that exists with regard to physical attacks on, harassment of and threats to journalists in Mozambique in the run up to the country\u2019s elections, in which \u201cjournalists should be free to cover without fear of threats, retaliation or physical harm.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IPI calls on Mozambique\u2019s government to consider the report\u2019s recommendations and the reactions of national and international stakeholders in the debate on projects to update the 1991 Press Law, to \u201censure that the legislation aligns with national and international press freedom commitments and principles.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf paramount importance is the need to ensure that strong legal safeguards are in place to guarantee the independence of media regulation in Mozambique,\u201d it concluded.<\/p>\n
