Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>ozambique\u2019s first term on the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) was the focus of a meeting between US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday in Washington.<\/p>\n

According to the US State Department, Blinken and Nyusi discussed \u201cshared global and regional priorities, including areas of cooperation during Mozambique\u2019s first and historic term on the UN Security Council in 2023-2024.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two leaders also reaffirmed their strategic partnership for the promotion of peace, stability and global health security.<\/p>\n

Blinken also highlighted the impact of the United States\u2019 strategy to prevent conflict and promote stability as a complement to government and civil society efforts in northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to our collaboration when Mozambique becomes a member of the UN Security Council in January, but we are also strong partners \u2013 strong partners to help Mozambique build stability, strong partners to build global health together, addressing food insecurity, and we welcome that partnership. There is much to discuss tonight,\u201d Blinken told Nyusi, quoted on the US executive\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican head of state called for greater cooperation between the two countries and for greater investment by the United States in his country.<\/p>\n

Blinken and Nyusi met in the US capital on the sidelines of the US-Africa Summit, which began on Tuesday and ends on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The summit has brought together leaders from across the African continent to discuss ways to strengthen ties and promote shared priorities with the United States.<\/p>\n

A total of 49 African heads of state and the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, were guests at this high-level meeting.<\/p>\n

The summit is expected to revive US relations with the African continent, suspended by former president Donald Trump, at a time when China and Russia are advancing their \u2018pawns\u2019 in the region.<\/p>\n
