Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General to Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni, said on Friday that \u201cthere are no resources\u201d to pay pensions to Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) guerrillas demobilised under the 2019 peace deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot pay pensions without being prepared and without resources,\u201d Manzoni told private TV channel STV from Serra da Gorongosa, in Sofala province, central Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Mirko Manzoni said that \u201cthe issue of pensions is not easy\u201d, and that \u201cwork is being carried out to find out how to get the resources\u201d so that the demobilised are \u201cintegrated into the pension system\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an issue that we have been negotiating for three years. We are now in a situation where all partners are committed to seeking a solution on pensions,\u201d the special envoy of Anto\u0301nio Guterres stressed.<\/p>\n

Manzoni also said that the pension system for demobilised soldiers \u201chas to be sustainable\u201d, noting that partners can help, but \u201cthe resources must be Mozambican\u201d.<\/p>\n

After surrendering their weapons, the guerrillas receive a subsidy for a period of a few months and then pensions are fixed.<\/p>\n

On Monday of last week, Renamo president Ossufo Momade, said that there was a \u201csystematic non-compliance with the peace agreement by the Mozambican government\u201d, noting that demobilised combatants \u201ccontinue to wait for the fixing of pensions\u201d, an issue that has been raised repeatedly.<\/p>\n

The Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process is part of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed on August 6, 2019, between the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and Renamo leader Alfonso Dhlakama.<\/p>\n

According to Renamo, 4,001 (80%) of the planned 5,254 fighters have already been demobilised.<\/p>\n
