Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Analysts on Friday argued that Mozambique should take advantage of the experience of the United States to \u201cimprove its performance\u201d and \u201celiminate\u201d terrorism in the north of the country, considering that the US-Africa summit may increase US support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States has experience in fighting terrorism, so [Mozambique] can take advantage to improve its delivery and eliminate that situation,\u201d Rui Mape, an analyst and economist from the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), told Lusa.<\/p>\n

For Rui Mape, the country\u2019s participation in the summit in Washington showed the \u201cinterest of the United States in Mozambique,\u201d and thus he believes it is necessary to assess to what extent the country can \u201ctake influence\u201d and \u201cbenefits\u201d from the event to get support to \u201cend the war situation in Cabo Delgado\u201d.<\/p>\n

De\u0301rcio Alfazema, analyst and programme manager at the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD) said that Mozambique\u2019s participation at theU.S.-Africa Leaders Summit was \u201cvery important\u201d and could increase the support provided by the United States in the fight against the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

For Alfazema, the fact that the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, had the opportunity to explain the situation in the country in person was important, in an event that the analyst considered a \u201ckind of diplomatic fair\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President spoke personally, explained what the state of play is and clarified doubts,\u201d Alfazema stressed, reiterating that \u201cit was worth Mozambique\u2019s participation\u201d and \u201cat the highest level\u201d, with the presence of the head of state.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique\u2019s participation did not go unnoticed\u201d as it is a country that \u201cis on the global map due to its presence in the United Nations Security Council,\u201d the analyst said.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for five years with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.<\/p>\n

The conflict has left one million people displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and about 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n
