Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Navy Commander affirmed yesterday that the maritime space off Cabo Delgado province is \u201ctotally free\u201d of the rebels terrorising the northern province for five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe naval component has consolidated all maritime spaces along the coast of Cabo Delgado, especially on the north bank. These areas are now totally liberated,\u201d Rear Admiral Eugenio Dias da Silva Muatuca told state media in Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

According to the source, the efforts of partners supporting government forces in equipment and training had boosted their capacity, allowing the recovery of areas previously in the hands of the insurgents, such as the port of Moci\u0301mboa da Praia, which was under rebel command for nearly a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Port of Moci\u0301mboa da Praia is operating normally, as also are activities related to gas projects [in the Palma district],\u201d Euge\u0301nio Muatuca stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this moment, our forces are positioned to discourage any illicit activity and guarantee the safety of the population who have gradually been returning to their villages,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado has been the scene of an armed insurgency since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the extremist Islamic State group.<\/p>\n

The violence has prompted a year-long military response with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).<\/p>\n

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and cost around 4,000 lives, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n
