Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican businessman kidnapped in Matola on December 14 was found dead yesterday night at an undisclosed location , after the kidnappers told his family members to go pick him up there because his health condition was \u201cvery bad\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to Anti-Raptos Beira, \u2018the kidnappers handed over the lifeless body of Hayum Aly Mamade to his relatives\u2019. They left the body in a certain place and told his children that his condition was\u201d very bad, When the children arrived, he was already dead, adds Anti-Raptos Beira.<\/p>\n

.Carta de Moc\u0327ambique confirms this information.\u201dAccording to Carta\u2019s sources, the kidnappers called the family to inform them that \u201che [Hayum Aly Mamade] was unwell\u201d and that they should pick him up at a certain, undisclosed place. The family found Hayyum sprawled [estatelado], Carta reports. \u201c. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead,\u201d Carta adds.<\/p>\n

Hayum Aly Mamade was kidnapped in Matola on the 14th December.<\/p>\n

Hayum Aly Mamade owned a shopping centre in Matola, the Kids R Us chain in Maputo, and popular ice cream parlours, Vanilla Gelado, in Matola and Maputo. The kidnapping, which only lasted for about 30 seconds, took place in broad daylight, and was caught on several security cameras,. These films have been posted by the Beira \u201cAnti-Raptos\u201d (\u201cAnti-Kidnapping\u201d) group on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n

The kidnappings have become big business. According to the Deputy Chairperson of the Confederation of Mozambican Business Associations (CTA), Prakash Prehlad, so far this year the kidnap gangs have extorted 35 million dollars from their victims and their families.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Maputoearlier this month at a workshop on money laundering and the financing of terrorism, Prahlad pointed out that the 35 million will be moved out of Mozambique through money laundering. Nobody knows how much of it will end up financing the islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

The kidnappings have been going on since 2011. The targets are usually business people of Asian origin in Maputo, Matola and Beira.<\/p>\n

Some business people have given up on Mozambique, largely because of the kidnappings, and are moving their money elsewhere.<\/p>\n

One example is Carlos Camurdine, who was abducted outside his wine store in central Maputo in April 2019 by three men armed with AK-47 assault rifles and held for two months until a ransom was paid. In June 2022 he bought the Fontecruz Lisboa Hotel, on Avenida da Liberdade, in the heart of the Portuguese capital, for 42 million euros, and is believed to be moving his business interests there.<\/p>\n
