Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), inaugurated the Mocuba City Intermediate Warehouse in Zambezia Province on July 23. This $2.5 million investment, in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MISAU), will strengthen the Mozambican health supply chain by expanding the distribution capacity of the government.<\/p>\n

Mozambique\u2019s health programs have expanded dramatically in recent years. In HIV medical care alone, the volume of medicine and equipment that passes through the system has increased 20-fold over the past 16 years and continues to grow. While the expansion of medical treatment contributes to Mozambique\u2019s development, it strains the existing infrastructure, which lacks enough storage facilities. This new warehouse in Zambezia provides more local storage and the capability to directly distribute medical supplies to health units, making medical products more accessible to Mozambicans nationwide.<\/p>\n

MISAU\u2019s Central Medical Stores (Central de Medicamentos e Artigos M\u00e9dicos or CMAM) serves as the backbone to the health system, distributing medicines and other commodities to over 1,500 health facilities throughout the country. As a key part of the CMAM system, the Mocuba City Intermediate Warehouse is one of three warehouses that are part of USAID\u2019s $7.3 million in support of the MISAU Strategic Plan for Pharmaceutical Logistics (PELF). The three warehouses will increase storage capacity in the province and will improve Mozambicans\u2019 access to life-saving medicines. The warehouses boast the use of new technologies that ensure stable temperatures for better stock maintenance and help warehouse managers easily track medicines for better stock rotation and accountability.<\/p>\n
