Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of Switzerland, Alain Berset yesterday reaffirmed his commitment to supporting development projects in Mozambique, visiting the town of Mueda, in central Cabo Delgado, a province that has faced an armed insurgency for five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to confirm Switzerland\u2019s commitment to the country\u2019s development, in particular with regard to sustainable economic development for the entire population\u201d, said Alain Berset, alongside the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi.<\/p>\n

On the second of a three-day visit to the country, Berset landed in Mueda on a Linhas Ae\u0301reas de Moc\u0327ambique (LAM) plane to be greeted by Nyusi, who was waiting for the inauguration ceremony of the Metical Square.<\/p>\n

The Metical Square\u2019s enclosure includes leisure and sports spaces, in addition to a sculpture alluding to the Mozambican currency, one of the symbols of the country.<\/p>\n

Mueda is a town which has escaped the fury of the armed conflict, unfolding a few dozen kilometres away, and therefore is a place hosting many internally displaced people (IDPS).<\/p>\n

Alain Berset strolled through the village and visited one of the reception centres for people fleeing rebel-hit areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel truly honoured to be in Mueda, a place with a lot of historical significance\u201d, Berset stressed, in a district that was the birthplace of the struggle for Mozambican independence.<\/p>\n

\u201cSwitzerland is a friendly confederation, not just now\u201d, highlighted Filipe Nyusi, noting that \u201cit was also a friend of Mozambique during the liberation struggle and also long before\u201d, through cooperation missions.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, in Maputo, Alain Berset had announced a program worth US$123 million (115 million euros) to create basic services such as water and electricity in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula over the next four years.<\/p>\n

Alain Berset is the first Swiss president to travel to Mozambique, in a visit that ends on Friday.<\/p>\n
